The weather lately has been nuts in Dallas.
One day it’s hot, the next day we have an inch of snow, the next day we only need coats and then in the weekend we bust out with flip flops. Despite the nice warm days we get here and there, it’s still cold and we all need some good covers to keep us warm!
Too cheesey? Hmm, okay lets try another route.
I walked into the concert with my date. This was years ago, but I still remember the day like it was yesterday. He bought me tickets to one of my favorite bands!!! We had the worst seats, the coldest beers in our hands and I was so stoked.
We danced, we laughed, we sang…soooooo ouuuut of tune. The band left the stage. The crowd started to “BOO.” How could 2 hours have already gone by so fast. Everyone wanted them to sing one more song…just one more song. The lead singer comes out, he grabs a guitar and starts to play, wait…is that a cover song he’s singing. OMG! He’s singing the song from that other band I just love!!
Isn’t that just the best?!
There’s something about a song that you love and someone else loves that makes you feel connected. Even if he’s a famous artist and doesn’t know you. Just the fact that you know that he sang one of your favorite songs makes you feel closer to him (or her). That was a great concert, a great night!
Then there’s that great feeling of being serenaded. I had a boyfriend who would leave me songs on voice mail. That was always awesome. I love when real life people do covers.
This weeks theme was chosen by the amazing Mags. Cover songs, 2 CD’s, the cover and the original must be on the CD. I’ll go first. The title of my CD is the quote from Robert Downey, Jr. in Tropic Thunder, when he was “the dude playin’ the dude, disguised as another dude!!!” Hahhaa..please tell me you ‘get’ that.

So I have a couple of disclaimers. First, let me start out by saying, YES LYNYRD SKYNYRD is amazing. But I do love Shinedown’s version. Get over it. It’s my opinion.
Hurt sung by Johnny Cash…best cover EVVVAAAAAAAAHH! How shitfaced were you when that version came out and then June died and he died like what? Months later. God, how stoked was she when she heard his version, it’s like, who’s NIN anyways? LOL And the CD Cover!!! Fuggetaboutit! It always haunts me, he looks dead in that cover!! Some people were just BORN to sing a certain song.
So like…the Jolene song by the White Stripes is not available on iTunes or Amazon, sorry Charlie. You can youtube it…
It was a single years ago. (side note: so speaking of Jack White, this weekend I went out and I swear i sat next to a guy that LOOKED EXACTLY like Jack White. All low key, black, should length hair, all emo dressed. we were sitting not even 1 foot away from each other, and I was trying to focus on the big TV at the restaurant and just not stare to see if it was him and I made a comment about Apolo Ohno’s long ass yawn, i said, “Damn that was the longest yawn in the history of ever!” and he like kind of touched my shoulder quickly with his hand and laughed at my comment and i swear it was jack white on a date with someone, i swear, i swear! It took everything I had not to jump his bones and ask him to marry me! I had to control myself, i am a lady after all, but i’d so do him just in hopes that through osmosis i’d get just 1% of his talent…that’s possible, right? *le sigh* it makes sense in my head…it should be possible!)
Okay, so the Creep song sung by Eddie Veddar, if you want that, email me, I’ll send you a link. It’s horrible. he’s completely off tune and it’s live and he doesn’t even know the lyrics, his mouth is too close to the microphone and it’s like recorded from some kind of 1980’s tape recorder. That’s why it rocks. But i would pay to see Eddie Vedder sing the yellow pages…”aardmore, albert – 356 tom laundry expressway apartment 304 – (972) 281-38onnneeeeeeeeeiiiiiggghhhttt.” So yeah. holler, i share.
The Old 97’s cover is not by anyone famous, other than this amazing guy who has the hottest voice that is meant to lull me to sleep every night…hehe. The best covers after all are the ones someone sings and puts on one cd and gives to you, right? (and then u go and turn our back and make the cd for someone else…ahaha).
P.S. My cheese song wouldnt fit on there but it was Lauryn Hill’s Can’t take My Eyes off of You, originally sung by Frankie Valli.
Okay, here are Mags CDs. She went to the Kernal for her cd art inspiration. How cool is that baked turkey? Next thanksgiving, for sure!! woo-woo!

My favorites from Mags are Valerie by Amy Winehouse, HOt in Here by Jenny Owen Youngs (go download now!!!), She Don’t Use Jelly by Ben Folds, Mad World by Michael Andres & Gary Jules!!
Okay, so what are some of your favorite covers?
